Electric Bikes Can Help Your Wallet and the Environment

Electric Bike

If you are looking to improve your personal transport situation then it's a no-brainer to think about using an electric bike. In these stressed economic times there can be few choices which can give you such a bang for your buck and help the environment at the same time. However, helping to save the world like Clark Kent is one thing, but there are a few common questions many people have about electric bikes. I will try to address them here.

I guess most people think of electric bikes as being nowhere near as fast as a motor bike and much more expensive than a regular bike. That is true to some extent. Still, it depends on how far your regular journey is likely to be, and how quickly you need to get there. An e-bike can get you from a to b nearly as quickly as most motor bikes or scooters in an urban setting - and what's that I hear? Nearly free to run? Yes pretty much, apart from a lot of plug-in time. It's definitely the transportation of the future. Over 100 million Chinese people can't be wrong! The trouble is...the initial expense.

Or is it? Have you thought about making an electric bike yourself? Some pre-built electric bikes have given the whole concept a bad name, it's true. Expensive to buy, poor range, low power, sometimes odd looking. You may find a good one, but having a bit more control over your pride and joy could lead to... pride and joy.

So what do you need to make one, and how much will it cost? About $300 should do it for a first attempt, plus a decent donor bike. There are a few quality variables like the motor and the batteries especially. You definitely get what you pay for, and the cheaper variety can be a false economy. They will probably need replacing much sooner. You will also need access to a few power tools to put it all together properly, and a decent plan of what you want to end up with.

If you have time you can pick up a lot from the many forums on electric bikes, maybe buy a book, or take the easier option and buy a kit. That will cost you about two-thirds the price of a pre-built electric bike, and should be quite easy to put together for most people. For the more adventurous though, I would definitely go for your own 'special'. (By Chris A Morris)

Electric Bike Route Planner

Electric Bikes

In this tutorial I will show you how to calculate the distance from your home (or any other point) to destinations you might like to ride your electric bike to. You can find out how far it is from your home to your office or favorite restaurant via trail or road. This is a great way to plan your route to avoid high traffic areas also.

You'll be surprised how many places you can get to and back with your electric bike. My bike gets about twenty miles per charge so I figure about 9 miles each way to be safe. I never really thought about it before I started ridding my electric bicycle, but almost all the places I go on a daily basis are within 9 miles of my house. All those years of starting up the car just to go a couple of miles was really wasteful and the gas used adds up fast and is really unnecessary.

The health benefits of electric bike is great because *you will ride everyday* not just when the conditions are perfect outside whereas you probably don't ride everyday on your non electric bike (right?).

O.K. on to the tutorial. This method works better than using other mapping applications because you can choose which streets and or paths, bike trails etc... that you want to take. And choosing back roads or secondary streets rather than busy roads that the other applications usually point you to. This is especially good for electric bike, but can be used effectively for any electric vehicle.

Open up Google Earth, type in your home address and put a pin in your roof. Select the push pen icon at top and move it to your starting location, give it a name and OK. Now select the Ruler tool in the tool bar. Choose Path in the fly out and select Miles. Begin your line by clicking once in the street in front of your house, then go to the point where you will turn and click. Continue the line until you are at your destination then give the route a name and save it. That's it! You can make as many routes as you like to all your favorite destinations and know that you'll have plenty of juice to get back home. (By Chuck Glenn)
