Electric Bikes Can Help Your Wallet and the Environment

Electric Bike

If you are looking to improve your personal transport situation then it's a no-brainer to think about using an electric bike. In these stressed economic times there can be few choices which can give you such a bang for your buck and help the environment at the same time. However, helping to save the world like Clark Kent is one thing, but there are a few common questions many people have about e-bikes. I will try to address them here.

I guess most people think of electric bikes as being nowhere near as fast as a motor bike and much more expensive than a regular bike. That is true to some extent. Still, it depends on how far your regular journey is likely to be, and how quickly you need to get there. An electric bike can get you from a to b nearly as quickly as most motor bikes or electric scooters in an urban setting - and what's that I hear? Nearly free to run? Yes pretty much, apart from a lot of plug-in time. It's definitely the transportation of the future. Over 100 million Chinese people can't be wrong! The trouble is...the initial expense.

Or is it? Have you thought about making an electric bike yourself? Some pre-built electric bikes have given the whole concept a bad name, it's true. Expensive to buy, poor range, low power, sometimes odd looking. You may find a good one, but having a bit more control over your pride and joy could lead to... pride and joy.

So what do you need to make one, and how much will it cost? About $300 should do it for a first attempt, plus a decent donor bike. There are a few quality variables like the motor and the batteries especially. You definitely get what you pay for, and the cheaper variety can be a false economy. They will probably need replacing much sooner. You will also need access to a few power tools to put it all together properly, and a decent plan of what you want to end up with.

Advantages of an Electric Bicycle

Electric Bicycles

Many people prefer to ride electric bicycle because electric bikes have many advantages. Below I will discuss some of them.

•    Electric bicycle is environmentally friendly. I think this benefit is the most important and significant one. As global warming and air pollution are becoming more and more serious, many people are concerned about environmental problems. So, electric bikes are becoming more and more popular. Electric bikes are powered by batteries so they will not pollute the environment.

•    You can have a chance to exercise and become healthy. Nowadays, people are lacking in exercise. However, electric cycles can offer them opportunities to exercise. As electric cycles have pedals, you can get healthy exercise easily from bicycling.

•    It is faster than a normal bicycle so you will not be sweaty when you reach your destination. Riding an electric bicycle is much faster than pedaling a normal bike. If you hurry to go somewhere, you can ride an electric bicycle to avoid being sweaty when you reach the destination.

•    It is not expensive to buy an electric bike. As more and more businessmen sell electric cycles, the price of an electric cycle is now affordable.

•    Though riding an electric bike is a little more expensive than riding a normal bike, it is cheaper than driving a car. Electricity is cheap but gasoline is very expensive. So it is very cheap to ride electric bikes.

•    An electric bicycle is classified as a normal bicycle, so anyone can ride it. However, if you want to drive a car, you need a license.

•    An electric cycle is easy and cheap to park because you do not need to buy a large garage to store it and you do not need to find a parking lot when you reach your destination.

•    Many parts of electric bicycle are available at bicycle stores, so if the electric bicycle is broken, you can simply send it to bike repair shops.

•    When the battery runs out, you can pedal the bike.

•    You can avoid traffic jams because you can use cycle lanes when riding an electric bike. This advantage can save you a lot of time.

•    You can enjoy the fresh air and beautiful surroundings when riding.

•    It is very easy to recharge the battery.

•    There are many types of electric bikes on the market now, so you can choose the one that suits you best.

•    If the electric cycle gets dirty, you can wash it yourself

If you have time you can pick up a lot from the many forums on electric bikes, maybe buy a book, or take the easier option and buy a kit. That will cost you about two-thirds the price of a pre-built electric bike, and should be quite easy to put together for most people. For the more adventurous though, I would definitely go for your own 'special'. (By Chris A Morris)

Electric Bike Route Planner

Electric Bikes

In this tutorial I will show you how to calculate the distance from your home (or any other point) to destinations you might like to ride your electric bike to. You can find out how far it is from your home to your office or favorite restaurant via trail or road. This is a great way to plan your route to avoid high traffic areas also.

You'll be surprised how many places you can get to and back with your electric bike. My bike gets about twenty miles per charge so I figure about 9 miles each way to be safe. I never really thought about it before I started ridding my electric bicycle, but almost all the places I go on a daily basis are within 9 miles of my house. All those years of starting up the car just to go a couple of miles was really wasteful and the gas used adds up fast and is really unnecessary.

The health benefits of electric bike is great because *you will ride everyday* not just when the conditions are perfect outside whereas you probably don't ride everyday on your non electric bike (right?).

O.K. on to the tutorial. This method works better than using other mapping applications because you can choose which streets and or paths, bike trails etc... that you want to take. And choosing back roads or secondary streets rather than busy roads that the other applications usually point you to. This is especially good for electric bike, but can be used effectively for any electric vehicle.

Open up Google Earth, type in your home address and put a pin in your roof. Select the push pen icon at top and move it to your starting location, give it a name and OK. Now select the Ruler tool in the tool bar. Choose Path in the fly out and select Miles. Begin your line by clicking once in the street in front of your house, then go to the point where you will turn and click. Continue the line until you are at your destination then give the route a name and save it. That's it! You can make as many routes as you like to all your favorite destinations and know that you'll have plenty of juice to get back home. (By Chuck Glenn)

The Multiple Uses of DC Motors

DC Motors
DC Motors

DC Motors are arguably the most useful type of electrical motors, and with good reason, they are designed to be used with batteries, solar cells or similar cell based energy sources, and as a result are used in systems where you don't have to be tied to a wall. Furthermore, even in systems where they are tied to the wall, sometimes it can be more efficient and cost effective to run DC Motors even in certain situations. Motors generally though give the impression of a gas guzzling car. In this article, I hope to dispel that myth, and educate you on where and when DC Motors can be and are used.

Low Power DC Motors

The lower power motors aren't really useful for things commonly associated with motors. Lifting and transportation applications require more power & torque for them to work. However, what they lack in power they make up in precision. Low power DC motors are particularly useful as speed changes from 0 to 1 are almost instantaneous. Therefore, they can be used successfully in digital systems.

A low speed, low power brushless DC motor can be found in most turntable devices, particularly precision turntable devices. Devices with such motors are things like personal computers (usually, with 3 motors in it, one for the hard drive, and one for the processor cooler), CD & DVD players.

Medium Power DC Motors

Medium power DC Motors have a use too in systems. Generally they are connected to the mains, and use a rectifier to convert the AC current into a DC current to be used for the task in hand. As a result of this, they also need to be stepped down (voltage reduced) so that the current doesn't overpower the circuit and burn out the motor. This limits their usage to larger systems that require room for both a stepper and a rectifier. But they still serve a purpose, particularly in systems where size nor speed is an issue, just reliability. One such place is in pinsetters in a bowling alley, for example.

High Power DC Motors

Arguably the most common and useful motors are High Power DC Motors. These motors are generally used in open systems, and generally used in systems were torque and power, as well as drive are paramount. Examples of such systems include electric wheelchairs, electric scooters, Segways, hybrid cars, as well as in elevators.

Tips to Buy DC Motor For Heavy Duty Equipment

Time for a new electrical motor? Make your purchase based on efficiency and from brands you can trust.

Looking for a powerful but simple motor that will endure through time and high stress? Buy a DC motor for efficient results.

The need for the highest level of efficiency, reliability and durability in a motor should not be ignored. Don't be fooled...the quality of your motor makes a huge impact on the performance of your equipment. You want a motor that will ensure a constant flow of energy so your motor will function without setbacks and without fail. And with hard-wearing industrial vehicle or equipment, especially, you need a motor you can trust.

For heavy-duty industrial vehicles

This need becomes more important when dealing with high load, high usage and heavy-duty vehicles or equipment such as transport trucks, city buses, fire engines, or commercial refrigeration. Be prepared with a 12v DC motor, for instance, and reduce the possibility or frequency of expensive repairs.

Ready to buy a quality DC motor...as soon as you know which one to buy

Motor's come in a number of different categories depending on purposes. A 12v DC motor, for instance, is part of a lift gate, a hydraulic pump, a Salter, a snow plow, or a winch.

And how do I find and buy a reliable DC motor? How do I know which brands I can trust?

Finding a reliable motor is more likely to occur if you go through a reliable distributor. Signs of a reliable distributor are:
> If they have many years of experience
> If they are representing top-quality brands
> If they demonstrate transparency through providing thorough customer service such as an on-line  catalog or a toll free customer service number, for instance
> If they provide a warranty or guarantee with their product

New and Improved Brushless Motor RC Cars

Brushless Motor
Brushless Motor

Brushless Motor became commercially available around the mid 1960's. Since then they have revolutionized all sorts of industrial and mechanical industries. On the RC aircraft, they made possible for electric planes, what was once possible only on planes equipped with internal combustion engines.

Brushless motors have made quite a splash in the world of RC cars and trucks. Because of their higher efficiency and power, among other things, they are quickly becoming the industry standard for electric RC vehicles. They are so powerful, in fact, that until 2006 they were actually illegal for use in officially sanctioned RC races. But how do they work?

An electric motor is essentially a rotating bar that contains an electromagnet positioned in between two stationary magnets. When the electricity is turned on, it creates a magnetic field that causes the electromagnet to spin. However, it can only spin 180 degrees before the electromagnet needs to switch polarities.

In a brushed system there are little brushes that come into contact with electrodes in order to flip the polarity of the electromagnet. So in essence, despite being an electrical system, the changing of the polarities is handled mechanically.

Brushless motors are almost the reverse of brushed motors. With a motor the electromagnet is on the stationary sides of the motor, and the magnets are on the rotor. The motor is then controlled by a computer instead of using the brushes for mechanical control.

There are many advantages to a brushless motor. A motor with brushes makes a lot of noise, is less powerful and efficient, is more prone to overheating and will wear out more quickly. In fact, these motors are just better. Basically the only disadvantage of these motors is that they are more expensive initially.
What does this mean for RC cars and trucks? First of all, it means power. Brushless motors produce more power and will make your RC car go faster. They also are more efficient and will power a vehicle longer on the same battery than a brushed motor will.

Brushless motors are more reliable for a number of reasons. There is no need to replace the brushes because there aren't any. They don't really overheat, and need less maintenance. They will last a very long time and really only the bearings need replacement. Brushed motors burn out comparatively quickly and will need to be replaced.

As stated before, the only real disadvantage to brushless motors is cost. They cost more than brushed motors initially, and they run much more efficiently on LiPo batteries. LiPo batteries are quite expensive, take longer to charge, and require a balance charger. Balance chargers can be pricey. LiPo batteries are also more dangerous as they can explode if overcharged. LiPo batteries are not necessary for these motors, but are highly recommended.

One other disadvantage to brushless motor is that they have a higher learning curve. They have to be programmed and this can be fairly difficult for beginners.

Beginners or those on a tight budget may prefer brushed motors simply for the price. Other than that, any serious electric RC hobbyist should really make the switch to a brushless system. They are the motors of the future, and one day will most likely replace all brushed motor. (By Jacob T Anderson )
